New project will offer a contemporary take on Michael Landon series

“Highway to Heaven” could be making a return trip to the TV screen.

The series, which starred Michael Landon from 1984 to 1989, is being developed as an edgier, contemporary reboot by A&E.

A&E Network general manager and executive vice president David McKillop, who ordered the project, announced its development on Thursday.

“Hell on Wheels” writer John Wirth is penning the script for the reboot, which is being executive produced by Wirth,  Mark Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson, Noreen Halpern and Wayne Lepoff.

Halfire-CORE Entertainment and A+E Studios are co-producing the reboot, in association with Closest to the Hole Productions and Leverage Entertainment.

The original series starred Landon in the tale of an angel who’s sent down to earth to help troubled souls. Wahlberg is also involved with the A&E reality series “Wahlburgers,” about his family’s restaurant.
