Artist Bill King
Title: Soul Jazz Vol 1 There It Is!
Label: 7 Arts Music
When compiling the music for Soul Jazz. Vol. 1, I kept in mind the profound influence artists and musicians such as Cannonball Adderley, Steely Dan, The Three Sounds, The Jazz Crusaders, Ramsey Lewis, Ray Charles, Herbie Hancock and his Headhunters, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, pianist Junior Mance and Stax Records have had on me throughout my lifetime.
On “There it Is!”, I mix and match. There’s Marvin Gaye’s, “How Sweet it is (To Be Loved By You)” – originals, “Sweet Talk” – homage to The Crusaders, “The Wake”, big respect for the Cannonball Adderley Quintet; Steely Dan, “In the Blues Garden”, Ray Charles, Jimmy Smith and Junior Mance in the slow blues “Five Aces” , Memphis Stax Records on “Stax ‘em High”, the soulful Ramsey Lewis/The Three Sounds on “Swamp Gator Crawl,” James Brown and the Headhunters on “There it Is!”, and Otis Redding – “I Can’t Turn You Loose.”
I’ve had the privilege the past decade to bring together some of Toronto’s top jazz/funk instrumentalists in the studio and do what we love doing the most. Popping the groove!
First up, the recording engineers – Mike Haas at Inception Sound, big thanks for all the brilliant tracks, and the remarkable Haywood Parrott – “Swamp Gator Crawl.”
