Shonda Rhimes Slams Media for Downplaying Amy Pascal’s ‘Racist’ Emails

“Scandal” creator Shonda Rhimes on Thursday said that an email exchange between Sony Pictures cochairman Amy Pascal and producer Scott Rudin about President Barack Obama was “racist” — not just “racially insensitive” as the media has characterized them.
The two joked in the emails — leaked in the Sony hack attack and published by BuzzFeed late Wednesday — about the president’s favorite movies, suggesting that he would prefer those about African Americans such as “Django Unchained” and “The Butler.”
“Calling Sony comments ‘racially insensitive remarks’ instead of ‘racist’?” Rhimes tweeted. “U can put a cherry on a pile of sh*t but it don’t make it a sundae.”

The remarks surfaced late Wednesday, and several media outlets including TheWrap used the phrase “racially insensitive” in their reports.
“Would he like to finance some movies,” responded Rudin, when Pascal sought his advice on what she should say to the President at a fundraiser.
“I doubt it. Should I ask him if he liked DJANGO?” said Pascal, with Rudin replying “12 YEARS.”
“Or the butler. Or think like a man?” continued Pascal, who is a major donor for the Democratic party and President Obama.
“Ride-along. I bet he likes Kevin Hart,” said Rudin.
The emails are part of the data apparently obtained in the massive hack attack on Sony by the group Guardians of Peace. The group is is demanding that the studio halt its release of the Seth Rogen-James Franco comedy “The Interview,” which lampoons North Korea.
